artworks by  Rowena Beaty

Rowena Beaty began sculpting in stone 20 years ago after moving to the Pennines. Her work is figurative, based on the human form. Early Greek and Romanesque art have been important influences.

She works from her garden studio with a variety of types of stone, but has a particular affinity to Lincoln limestone, with its high fossil content, which she sources from the Cathedral quarry. All her work is crafted using traditional hand tools.

For Rowena the use of stone as a material provides a visual and physical connectedness with landscape and time. Her work explores the rhythms of change and metamorphosis in the natural world, and finds a parallel in the tides and transformations in the cycle of our own life.
