Born Bangalore, Madras. Died London. Educated at Fettes College Edinburgh and Edinburgh University.

Studied at Slade School of Art 1884-5 under Legros and in Paris under Boulanger and Cormon 1886-7. Spent the Summer of 1886 in Port Aven where he met Gauguin. He was at his best depicting rural characters and a set of drawings called 'Cotswald types' was acquired by the British Museum.
